Okay let’s talk about makeup and this beauty industry really quick. I’m about to call out the good, the bad, and the AMAZING.. This is something I have always felt strongly about. I love how these big brands are starting to get it, but a lot of them still need a lot of work.

Black Owned Beauty Businesses that are BOMB

  • Fenty Beauty
  • Pat McGrath
  • JD Glow Cosmetics
  • Midas Cosmetics

Local Black Wedding Vendors that are My Fav

They seriously have some talent and I will be hiring 3 of them for my wedding in the future. Can you say that about your vendors? Is your wedding vendor list inclusive?

  • DJ West (@djestsidestory) (I hired)
  • Kellie Corbett (@kelliecorrbett_mua) (I hired)
  • Candice Rauch (@candicethemakeupartsit)
  • Alana Manning (@bellavitaartistry)
  • Devonte Waller (@devontewallerphoto) (I hired)

Makeup Brands Who Are NOT Very Inclusive

This could be for a number of reasons but mainly because of their foundation rage. They completely overlook people of color with darker skin shades and it’s APPALLING and this needs to change. What made me even more mad is that they made a ‘Black Lives Matter’ statement.. yet they could really care less based on what they launch. I wanted to highlight these brands so you are aware, and also so you can be just as disgusted as I am.

Tarte Cosmetics Face Tape Foundation

Now you might be wondering why I put this on here because their range is actually not awful. This is actually a relaunch. Their first launch of this foundation had 2…. TWO FREAKING SHADES.. for people with darker skin tones. They got soooooo much backlash they had to relaunch. And this worst part was that the two shades didn’t match ANYONE.. Go on YouTube and watch this video. It’s absolutely ridiculous that Tarte launched this and thought it was okay. And the only reason they updated the ranges was because they got backlash.

Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day Foundation

They have 3 shades for people of color…

Benefit Cosmetics Hello Happy Velvet Powder Foundation

They have 3 MAYBEEEE 4 shades. And it’s not even that dark.. It’s just awful.

YSL Touche Eclat Foundation

Honestly I think all of their foundations that they are selling have awful shade ranges, but this specific one only offers 4 shades.

Beauty Blender Bounce Foundation

This is yet another relaunch because the first one got sooooo much backlash!! Here is another video by my girl Jackie Aina who is always speaking up for black girls!!

Makeup Brands With the Most Inclusive Foundation Ranges

  • Fenty Beauty
  • Maybelline (not cruelty free)
  • Bobbi Brown (not cruelty free)
  • MAC Cosmetics (not cruelty free)
  • Cover FX
  • Too Faced Born This Way
  • Pat McGrath (not cruelty free)
  • Estee Lauder (not cruelty free)

There are plenty more, but these are my favs and they are absolutely AMAZING foundation formulas!!

The beauty industry still has a lot to learn but there is small progress being made and it is a start, but we are not done yet. We must keep fighting and keep pushing these big brands to be inclusive in all things they do. Not only foundation but who they sponsor work with, how their social medias look, and so much more. We need to see more color.

Please watch, read, listen, learn, do your own research, and follow RIGHT NOW. This is the time to come together rather than apart. I’m unlearning and relearning so much so I can be better and I STRONGLY feel everyone needs to self reflect and be better for our black community. I’m working hard.. Are you!!??

xoxo,
Katlyn
